Suppose you and I are in acompletely dark room, and Iam holding a cigarette. When Ilight the tip, a small glowingpoint appears. Since the roomis pitch-black, you cannot seemy hand. If I ask, “What shapedo you see now?” you wouldnaturally say, “I see a red dot.”
If I tie a string to the cigarette and swing it like apendulum, and then ask what you see, you would say thatyou see an arc (a semi-circle). If I then spin it faster andfaster in a continuous circular motion, you still cannot seemy hand, the person moving it, or the background. Youonly perceive a continuous shape, which is nothing morethan an optical illusion. If I ask what shape you see now,you would say, “I see a circle.”
However, if you recall from geometry, to form an actualcircle, I would need to place 360 cigarettes (or points) sideby side. But how many cigarettes do I actually hold in myhand? Only one. That is called “Waḥdat al-Wujūd” (theunity of existence).
